The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Health Professions welcomes applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean for Research and Innovation. Charged with pushing the boundaries of scholarship at one of the leading schools of its kind, the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation will join a new leadership team in a period of unprecedented growth and momentum.
The School of Health Professions is one of the largest health professions schools in the nation and a gem in the crown of UAB. It serves students in bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs in the fields of clinical and diagnostic sciences, health services administration, nutrition sciences, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. The school’s faculty have more NIH funding than any other school of health professions in the country. Total research funding is over $22M, which has placed it in the top two schools of health professions for five decades. Its programs are highly rated with its Master’s in Health Administration program cited as number one in the nation.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham is one of the nation’s premier research universities. It is currently ranked 15th (top four percent) in the nation among public universities and 31st overall (top four percent) in federally funded research expenditures. Its strengths in the health sciences are remarkable; schools of medicine, dentistry, optometry, nursing, and public health are co-located in downtown Birmingham. Schools of engineering, business, education, and arts and sciences offer further opportunity for collaboration.
The Associate Dean for Research and Innovation will serve as the school’s research principal. They will report directly to the dean and serve as a key member of the senior leadership team. Collaboration, high morale, and respect define the school, so the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation will enter this positive culture and harness aspirations across all departments to build scholarship. The position requires working collaboratively across the school and university, shaping and implementing a dynamic strategic plan to advance the school’s research status, fostering collaboration across the institution, developing new and nurturing existing external partnerships, and creating the necessary infrastructure to support a growing research enterprise.
The successful candidate will have an earned doctoral degree, acquired relevant leadership experience including a record of distinguished scholarship, and funded research. A successful track record of advancing research at a research-intensive university or research institute of similar size, scale and complexity, is expected. Experience supporting research partnerships and collaborations, a record of research infrastructure development, and an appreciation for all forms of scholarly activity is needed. A keen understanding of a variety of funding mechanisms, advocacy and compliance is essential.
