Organizational Unit Overview The College of Allied Health Sciences at East Carolina University (ECU) seeks an enthusiastic and visionary leader to serve as the next Chair of the Department of Nutrition Science. The College is located within the Division of Health Sciences, along with medicine, dentistry, and nursing. It is adjacent to a 900-bed, level-1 trauma center which offers multiple opportunities to partner with its practitioners. ECU, with 29,000 students, is located in Greenville, North Carolina (population of 89,000) and is 90 miles from the Research Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill) or from the Crystal Coast.
The Department of Nutrition Science currently has 12 full-time faculty members. As a productive and growing department, its academic programs include: an undergraduate Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD); a pre-professional Nutrition Science program); a supervised dietetic internship program (DI); a graduate program (MS); and a combined MS-DI.
The Department has a long-standing commitment to scholarly inquiry in community-based and basic/translational science research that extends across the lifespan. Current research and creative activity in the department focus on food/nutrition education and outreach, nutritional assessment of vulnerable populations, weight management and disease prevention, and nutrient-related pathophysiology. Our faculty have strong collaborations with the College of Health and Human Performance, Nursing, School of Dentistry, and Brody School of Medicine. Brody School of Medicine is a leader in obesity research, cardiovascular health, and endocrinology, and affords collaborative teaching/research opportunities for faculty.
Job Duties The Chair of the Department of Nutrition Science will report directly to the Dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences and is expected to advance the college's vision of state and national distinction in professional education, research, and service. The Chair is also responsible for meeting requirements set forth by the ACEND and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The successful candidate will be eligible for appointment at the associate or full professor level.
In addition to the basic duties outlined above, the Chair of the department will also be expected to provide leadership for the department's teaching, research, and service mission, while managing fiscal resources. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: recruiting and mentoring early and mid-career faculty; facilitating communication and professional development among faculty; evaluating tenured/tenure-track faculty and staff members' annual performance; managing the operation of the department's offices and staff; jointly with the department's tenure committee advising and counseling faculty members on tenure and promotion application procedures; promoting the department to internal and external stakeholders within the scope of the strategic plan; promoting alumni and fundraising activities; and other duties as assigned by the Dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences.
Finally, a strong candidate should possess strong communication and interpersonal skills and serve as an advocate for the department, engage in transparent decision-making while nurturing a culture of consensus and collaboration.
Minimum Education/Experience An earned Doctorate in nutrition or closely related field with a record of externally funded research and demonstrated administrative skills.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education Registered Dietitian credentials are preferred. Record of significant scholarly contributions to teaching, research, along with excellent administrative leadership experience is desired. We also seek faculty with a record of strong communication, interpersonal, and administrative skills. The ideal candidate will also possess a collaborative leadership style and demonstrate a clear commitment to both undergraduate and graduate education in the field of dietetics and nutrition science.
