Job Overview This position will be a teaching and research position, with a focus on managing a large interdisciplinary Laboratory in the Department of Nutrition Sciences (Nutritional Biochemistry Laboratory). We are seeking an individual for the position of Assistant Clinical Professor and Laboratory Manager. The candidate must have a PhD in Nutrition, Food Science, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Microbiology or a directly related field with at least 2 years of analytical chemistry experience. This position will be focused on managing one of the large interdisciplinary Laboratories (Nutritional Biochemistry Laboratory) in the Department of Nutrition Sciences at Drexel University. This Laboratory supports faculty and their graduate students in both basic science and applied/clinical sciences. In addition. The candidate must also have prior research experience in data collection and sampling methods. The individual will be expected teach courses throughout the year, thus, previous teaching experience is desirable, but not required.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Research and Coordination •Assures that all Laboratory staff members faculty and their students are compliant with training requirements. •Assists Department Chair with appropriate compliance for the Laboratory and all personnel. •Maintain strict protocols for Laboratory personnel (staff, faculty, and students). •Coordinate and schedule work to be conducted in the Laboratory to maintain efficiency and avoid safety issues. •Directs, coordinates and implements analytical methods for the study of biochemical, food science, environmental, microbiology and applied and clinical research studies. •Designs and implements analytical methods for the analysis of environmental and biological samples using GC, GC/MS, LC/MS, AA, Ion Chromatography and HPLC analytical instruments. •Develops methods and implements the analysis of nutritional and other bioactive ingredients in biological and product samples. •Develops methods and conducts analysis for acute phase biomarkers from biological samples valuable in the study of conditions such as stress, anxiety, sleep patterns and diabetes mellitus. •Performs ELISA (Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay). •Maintains current knowledge of analytical instruments: GC, GC/MS, UV/Vis and Electro chemical HPLC, LC-MS-MS, Ion chromatography, AA, ICP Spectrometers, Fluorescence Microscope, Ultracentrifuge, Spectrometers, Calorimeter, Plate reader, pH meters, etc. •Participates in interviews of research participants, if requested by Principal Investigator (PI)/faculty member.
Facilities and Equipment •Manages Laboratory systems to ensure accuracy in analytical methods, and security of sample handling. •Responsible for the interpretation and dissemination of analytical results to the PI. •Oversees and conducts all quality control and quality assurance checks in the analytical Laboratory. •Monitors functions of all Laboratory equipment and instrument calibration. •Evaluates and coordinates any major equipment purchases for the Laboratory and oversees the service contract agreements for all analytical instruments. •Trains new research staff on proper analytical protocols. •Supports Laboratory safety training and educational efforts. •Conducts Laboratory safety audits. •Assists faculty in installation/calibration of new equipment purchases. •Develops and maintains an inventory of all samples stored in Laboratory freezers. •Maintains current knowledge of applicable software. •Maintains all records of work performed, inventory management, and safety.
Financial, etc. •Assists the Department Chair in strategically expanding the Laboratory capabilities to serve the faculty and students of the department and investigators outside the Department. •Maintain the operational budget within accepted parameters in coordination with the Department Chair. •Teach courses as requested by Department Chair. •Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications Must have a PhD in Nutrition, Food Science, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Microbiology or a directly related field. 2 or more years of analytical chemistry experience required. Strong interpersonal and organization skills, with experience in interviewing techniques essential. Must have high level of effectiveness in a multicultural environment.
