- Postdoctoral Fellowship to Enhance Health and Address Nutrient Deficiencies
Description
Located within the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives in the Office of the Director, National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) serves as the lead program office focused on advancing and disseminating research on dietary supplements to foster knowledge and optimize health across the lifespan.
This project, entitled, “Enhancing health by addressing nutrient deficiencies and improving physical activity during GLP-1 agonist treatment” explores the role for dietary supplements, dietary patterns, as well as bone-loading and muscle-strengthening activity, in the context of GLP-1 agonist obesity treatment.
What will I be doing?
In this program the fellow will participate in trans-NIH collaborative discussions about research gaps that need to be addressed for teens and adults being treated with GLP-1 Receptor Agonists for weight loss. The fellow will also have an opportunity to participate in NIH and trans-agency groups in the space of childhood and adult obesity, nutrition, physical activity, and others based on the fellow’s scientific expertise and interests.
Under the direction of a mentor, the fellow will learn how to design, contribute to and perform timely literature reviews, epidemiological analyses, and commentaries on GLP-1 Receptor Agonists and their potential effects on nutritional status, physical activity, bone morphology, fracture risk, and muscle quality. The goal of these collective research efforts is to draw attention to the pressing need to address the role of health behaviors during and after GLP-1 Receptor Agonist treatment, explore the benefits and potential harms of supplement use, given that many are being marketed as weight loss drugs.
Why should I apply?
The fellow would grow professionally by learning how NIH stimulates research while also making connections with the leading experts in this field. The experiences gained by participating in this program will enhance career opportunities in government and research.
