The University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) is seeking an expert in production animal nutrition for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor with tenure.The successful candidate will be expected to develop and lead an externally funded research program and spend substantial time on research. There is a strong focus on gastro-intestinal research, both within UCVM and across the University of Calgary (U of C). The successful candidate will be encouraged to engage with several active research groups at the U of C, including the UCVM Cattle Health Research Group, the Western Canadian Microbiome Centre and the Cumming School of Medicine Gastrointestinal Research Group. UCVM is co-located with the Cumming School of Medicine, providing outstanding research infrastructure and a unique environment for comparative medical and One Health research. External to the U of C, there are also numerous opportunities for collaboration, including the University of Alberta, University of Saskatchewan, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Research Centres, and various other institutions and groups. In addition, the successful candidate will teach all aspects of general and production animal nutrition in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program, including lectures, laboratories and practicum rotations. Contributions to graduate education, including developing and delivering courses, supervising graduate students and serving on graduate student committees, as well as various service activities, are also expected.Minimum qualifications include a PhD (or equivalent) in some aspect of production animal nutrition, with either a DVM (or equivalent) or postdoctoral training. Preference will be given to individuals with expertise in bovine nutrition. A commitment to teaching excellence is required. Appointments with clinical responsibilities in the Distributed Veterinary Teaching Hospital require eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience. Appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor normally requires evidence of successful teaching ability or professional experience, with evidence of appropriate research or professional activity beyond that involved in the completion of academic or professional training. Appointment to the rank of Associate Professor requires evidence of teaching effectiveness, recognized research attainment or equivalent professional attainment, and a satisfactory record of service.UCVM, the youngest veterinary medical faculty in Canada, is already well established amongst research-intensive North American veterinary colleges, due to the quality of its research programs and engagement of undergraduate and graduate students with research. There are ~70 faculty members, 130 staff, 125 DVM students, 120 graduate students, 30 post-doctoral fellows, and 15 advanced clinical trainees. The DVM program is an integrated core-elective program, with enhanced educational opportunities in defined areas, combining discipline-based courses with extensive on- and off-campus experiential learning. UCVM uses a distributed veterinary learning community, including public and private practice partners, to deliver its fourth-year practicum program.
