| FACULTY POSITION IN OBESITY MEDICINE|
DEPARTMENT OF NUTRITION SCIENCES

The Department of Nutrition Sciences chaired by W. Timothy Garvey, MD, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is recruiting an obesity medicine physician to fill an academic faculty position. The candidate will have responsibilities in clinical care, research, and education related to obesity, metabolic diseases, and nutrition. The position is full-time and tenure-earning at any professorial rank commensurate with the candidate's knowledge, skills, and experience.
The candidate will lead current programs and new initiatives involving the innovative care of patients with obesity and metabolic diseases. Patient care responsibilities include serving as an attending physician at UAB Weight Loss Medicine, a multi-disciplinary clinic for patients with obesity. If experience warrants, the candidate will be eligible for appointment as co-medical director of the clinic. In addition, provision of inpatient nutrition support consultation at the nearby Birmingham VA Medical Center is preferred but not required. Ample time will be available for research, and the candidate will have educational and mentoring opportunities involving medical and graduate students, residents, fellows, and dietitians. In addition, the applicant will provide several lectures in the medical school curriculum pertaining to obesity, nutrition, and chronic disease.
The candidate will be expected to participate in research either by providing clinical collaboration and support for research protocols or by conducting original research as a principal investigator. The Department of Nutrition Sciences is one of the top-funded nutrition programs in the U.S. and hosts two NIH-funded centers on metabolic disease: the UAB Diabetes Research Center and the UAB Nutrition Obesity Research Center. It is also heavily involved in the NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Department has 26 full-time faculty members and more than 100 staff, students, postdoctoral fellows, and dietitians involved in basic, animal, physiologic, clinical, and community-based research, patient care, and teaching. UAB is a flourishing urban university and medical center with annual research funding exceeding $528 million.
The successful candidate should have a MD and be board certified in Internal Medicine with experience in obesity medicine. Subspecialty training in Endocrinology & Metabolism and/or as a physician nutrition specialist and a track record of academic excellence, mentoring, and research are desirable.
